2019 Mayakoba Golf Classic

THE OVERVIEW

El Camaleon Golf Course, Playa Del Carmen, Mexico – The El Camaleon Golf layout is a Greg Norman design that winds through tropical jungle and mangroves and along oceanfront sand. The course this week will play as a 6,987-yard par 71 and consists of paspulum grass that some players tend to play really well on (I’m looking at you Pat Perez).

It’s a ball striker’s track with a lot of trouble in play. A series of canals runs through the Mayakoba track and are potential hazards off of the tee on most holes. Given the course’s average length, many of the past champions here have not been big hitters. So, we’ll be looking to favor accuracy over distance.

When selecting players this week, I’ll be favoring ball striking stats from the past five events pretty heavily. That may not be the most recommended course of action, but it is one way to play an event like this and I have committed to it here.

2019 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open

THE OVERVIEW

TPC Summerlin, Las Vegas, Nevada – The TPC Summerlin is a par-71, 7,255- yard track laid out just below stunning red rock foothills on the west side of Las Vegas, Nevada.  The course winds over and through numerous jagged-rock canyons and features lots of elevation change, big greens, some elusive fairways, and plenty of risk/reward situations. All together, it is a bit of a bomber’s course and scores should be really low (Rod Pampling shot an opening round 60 here in 2016).

Some variables that we will be paying close attention to are: current form, course history, driving distance, and putting.

2019 Sanderson Farms Championship

THE OVERVIEW

Country Club of Jackson, Jackson, Mississippi   The stateside PGA event this week is going to Jackson, Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship at the Country Club of Jackson.

This course this week is a 7,421-yard, par 72, John Fought design and features bermuda grass throughout and small, tricky green complexes.

Putting should be a major key to winning this week and since a number of past winners won for the first time at the Sanderson, don’t be afraid to play pros that might otherwise be considered unproven.

Update: Weather is supposed to be a factor this week. Wind and rain. Keep an eye on players’ tee times and select accordingly.

2018 WGC – HSBC Champions

THE OVERVIEW

Sheshan International Golf Club, Shanghai, China   Often cited as one of the best golf courses in all of China, Sheshan International Golf Club features big valleys and rolling, tree-lined fairways combined with a bunch of water in play.

This week the course will play as a 7,266-yard par 72 and should be a pure birdie fest with the winning aggregate score less than 20 under.

When selecting players this week, I’ll be looking at current form, course history, Birdie or Better Percentage, SG: Off the Tee, GIR, and SG:Putting.

2018 CJ Cup at Nine Bridges

THE OVERVIEW

Nine Bridges Golf Club, Jeju, South Korea   The PGA is going to the South Korea for the second edition of the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges. The CJ Cup is sponsored by the very wealthy CJ Group and held on the beautiful island of Jeju just off the southern coast of South Korea.

The course this week will play as a 7,196-yard, par 72 and features wide landing areas off the tees, a fair amount of water in play, swirling winds, a lot of well-placed bunkers, and big, undulating greens. Nine Bridges is a wonderful looking layout that features on numerous best courses in the world lists…and last year, it provided some fireworks in the form of that dramatic playoff between Justin Thomas and Marc Leishman.

When selecting players this week, I’ll be looking at current form, last year’s scores, Strokes Gained Approach, Par 5 Scoring, and Birdie or Better Percentage.

PAST WINNERS

2017  -9   Justin Thomas   (Runner Up, Playoff :    Marc Leishman)
